It’s never too late to be safe, especially when it comes to gases, like the colorless, tasteless and odorless radon, which occurs naturally in the NH granite and in the public and private wells drilled from within that bedrock. Nearly one out of every 15 homes in the U.S. is estimated to have an elevated radon level (4.0 pCi/L or greater), and in New Hampshire that number is one in three!
Radon occurs when radium breaks down and is considered a health hazard due to its high radioactivity. It typically enters the home from the ground, and into the air, through cracks in the foundation and through the up-flow of private well water. Any home, new or old, with or without basements, can face potential radon issues. No home is immune.
Know the dangers. There is no safe level of radon…
Not only can radon be ingested through tainted drinking water, radon from bedrock wells is commonly released into the air of your home during activities such as showering, dishwashing or doing laundry, causing radon solids to leech into the air you breathe, and cling to dust particles in the air that then attach to the airways of the lungs.
Exposure to radon poses an increased risk of developing certain types of cancer, primarily those of the lungs and stomach. Radon in the air of your home can also be transferred into the lungs from second-hand smoke and stands as the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers, responsible for 21,000 deaths annually.
State and federal agencies recommend taking steps to lower radon concentrations when they equal or exceed 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) in the lowest and most commonly used space of a home.
Radon Mitigation & Remediation | How Can Capital Well Help?
Radon testing in NH is the first step to mitigation, remediation, and its ultimate removal — and it’s the only way to be sure you and your family are safe. For every 10,000 pCi/L of radon in a home’s water supply, the radon concentration in indoor air is increased by 1 pCi/L. Concentration can vary substantially from one test to another so the New Hampshire DES recommends at least two tests, at least 30 days apart, prior to making any treatment decisions.
The primary method for NH radon mitigation is aeration, a process in which fresh oxygen is driven or bubbled into the water. Using state-of-the-art water treatment systems, our team helps deliver to our NH residential and commercial customers the cleanest, purest water possible.
Eliminate your worries with an experienced and licensed well water contractor and keep your water clean, clear, and safe.
