No Water at All
When a tap produces nothing, the cause is usually the pump, the pressure tank or the electrical supply to the pump. A failed submersible pump typically gives no warning. Before you call a plumber, call a licensed well and pump contractor — plumbers generally cannot service the components below your well cap.

Low or Dropping Water Pressure
Gradual pressure loss usually points to a waterlogged pressure tank, a clogged filter or sediment buildup in the well casing. Sudden pressure loss more often indicates a failing pump or a leak in the drop pipe. We diagnose the actual cause before recommending a replacement.

Pump Running Constantly or Short-Cycling
A pump that will not shut off, or that cycles rapidly on and off, is usually a failed pressure tank bladder or a pressure switch out of adjustment. Left alone, short-cycling burns out the pump — this is a repair worth making immediately rather than waiting.

Sputtering Taps or Air in the Lines
Air at the fixtures generally means the water level in the well has dropped below the pump intake, or the well is producing less than the household is drawing. Hydrofracturing frequently resolves this without drilling a new well.
